Smart Building Controls for Modern Commercial Buildings

Why Smart Building Controls Are Reshaping Commercial Buildings

A decade ago, smart building controls were rarely part of the conversation when talking about new construction. In 2026, that’s changed dramatically. Commercial buildings no longer operate the way they did back then. Office environments constantly shift between collaborative workspaces, private offices, conference rooms, and hybrid occupancy schedules. Building systems are now expected to respond in real time while supporting energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and operational visibility.

The problem? Traditional building controls were never designed for this level of intelligence.

Most commercial facilities still rely on fragmented infrastructure, with separate systems for lighting, sensors, controls, shading, and automation. As buildings grow smarter, this siloed approach creates unnecessary complexity, limits scalability, and reduces visibility across the facility. Facilities teams are left managing disconnected hardware platforms, redundant wiring, and integrations that don’t talk to each other.

Modern buildings require something different: Smart facility infrastructure capable of unifying power, data, automation, and device management into a single centralized platform.

That’s where the Inspextor Supernode from MHT Technologies changes the conversation.

Buildings Are Becoming IT Assets

As smart building infrastructure converges with enterprise IT networks, lighting and controls are no longer isolated facility systems. They’re network-connected operational assets.

Today’s intelligent commercial spaces require infrastructure capable of supporting real-time automation, occupancy-driven controls, environmental sensing, centralized management, and data-driven optimization. Traditional control systems, built around disconnected hardware and proprietary protocols, simply can’t deliver this level of flexibility.

The Inspextor Supernode was designed specifically for this new generation of intelligent commercial environments.

What Is the Inspextor Supernode?

The MHTi-SUPERNODE is an advanced Power over Ethernet (PoE) control platform built on the IEEE 802.3bt standard. UL 2108 and UL 924 compliant, it delivers up to 90W of power while supporting a wide range of smart building applications.

Unlike traditional lighting control hardware, the Supernode functions as a flexible smart building controls platformcapable of managing:

  • Dimmable LED and tunable white fixtures
  • RGBW lighting systems
  • IoT sensors and wall switches
  • PoE shades and automation devices
  • Low-voltage peripherals

A single Supernode can support up to eight individual lighting fixtures, four tunable white fixtures, and two RGBW fixtures — eliminating the need for separate hardware platforms for each building function.

The Supernode also supports Constant Current (CC) and Constant Voltage (CV) configurations, selectable output voltages from 12V to 48V, 0–10V dimming, RS485 communication, emergency power functionality, and dual-input power using PoE and/or 24–60VDC. The result is a more scalable, adaptable smart building controls strategy capable of evolving alongside changing workplace demands.

Cisco Catalyst 9300: The Network Backbone

Intelligent devices alone aren’t enough. Smart building controls require a secure, enterprise-grade network backbone capable of supporting converged building infrastructure.

That’s where the Cisco Catalyst 9300 Series becomes critical. These switches deliver both power and data over a single Ethernet cable, simplifying infrastructure while centralizing management across lighting, automation, sensors, and control systems. IT and facilities teams gain greater visibility into building operations without the overhead of managing separate networks — creating a stronger foundation for long-term scalability as buildings evolve into connected, data-driven environments.

This converged PoE architecture has already been deployed across numerous MHT projects, including Cisco office environments throughout the United States.

Centralized Intelligence Through aida™

While Inspextor hardware provides the physical smart building control infrastructure, aida™ by Building AI Solutions serves as the centralized software intelligence layer operating at the server level.

Through this architecture, aida communicates with and controls Supernodes, Node 90 controllers, Core Nodes, IoT sensors, wall switches, and API integrations — unifying automation, sensing, lighting control, and system management across the entire building ecosystem.

Together, Inspextor hardware and aida software enable:

  • Occupancy-based automation
  • Real-time monitoring and environmental sensing
  • Space utilization analytics
  • Intelligent scene control
  • Building-wide operational visibility

Because aida operates across the full Inspextor ecosystem, organizations can scale intelligent smart building control strategies across multiple floors, departments, and facilities while maintaining centralized oversight.

Simplifying Commercial Building Infrastructure

One of the biggest pain points in modern facilities is infrastructure complexity. Traditional building systems require separate wiring, dedicated controls, isolated management systems, and fragmented integrations that drive up deployment costs and limit future flexibility.

The Supernode addresses this directly by combining power, control, and communication into a unified PoE-based platform, reducing electrical complexity, accelerating deployment, and lowering ongoing maintenance requirements.

The Future of Smart Building Controls

Commercial buildings are rapidly becoming intelligent operational environments powered by connected infrastructure, automation, and real-time data. Organizations need smart building controls for commercial buildings that can support this transformation without adding unnecessary complexity.

The combination of the Inspextor Supernode, Cisco Catalyst 9300 networking infrastructure, and aida software gives organizations the ability to create connected commercial spaces that are more responsive, scalable, and manageable — whether the application is an enterprise office, innovation center, healthcare facility, or education campus.

For organizations investing in modern commercial infrastructure, the Supernode is more than a lighting controller. It’s a foundational platform for the connected smart building ecosystem.
